Floyd Mayweather RIDES cover: image build up
Following up to last week’s post on the Mayweather RIDES cover, here’s a look at the various layers used to build up the final image above!
This is the base file, give or take a few RAW adjustments, that was brought into photoshop. We knew that we wanted the final image to be “outdoors” in some fashion, so shooting outside in sunlight made sense. Four lights were used, the main light camera right with a beauty dish, the second camera left for some added fill, then the third and fourth backlighting from either side, which gave the cool highlights across the aluminum hood.
One of the more iconic features of a Rolls Royce Phantom is the huge grill, which art director extraordinaire David Zamdmer wanted to make sure we had enough of to work with for the layout. Without dragging on forever, given the length of the massive front end, I knew we’d have to depend on some retouching in order to bring it all together. The perspective was tweaked and transformed a good bit to straighten out and shorten up the length of the hood, then the grill and bumper were extended downward using the clone stamp tool. The left headlight portion was copied and flipped for the right side, and the fog lights were brought in from another file.
Above is Floyd after the retouching. The layer was further broken down in the PSD file, as the shirt and skin tones needed to be processed separately to bring in proper exposures.
File used for the landscape in the background.
The sky in the landscape file was pretty wild, so the sky above was brought in to give a much better overall flow.
Here’s a look at the final cover again. They did some further color and exposure correction for their printer to make sure no detail was lost on either end.
